Course 2: June 11-17, 2005

PLEASE NOTE :

The registration for the current S* Bioinformatics Practical Workshop is CLOSED.

In addition to the traditional online S* Bioinformatics Course, the 6th Course which will be held in June to August 2005, the S* Secretariat will be holding the first S* Practical Bioinformatics Hands-on Workshop which is scheduled to be held from 7th May 2005 to 13th May 2005 at 10 Kent Ridge Drive, National University of Singapore, Singapore 119242.

This Hands-on Workshop will be held immediately following the 2nd International Symposium on Life Sciences Grid, LSGrid 2005 (5-6 May 2005) at the GridAsia Conference (GridAsia Registration Free).

In addition, there is a second identical course scheduled for 11th June 2005 to 17th June 2005 at the same venue, prior to the ISMB 2005 conference in Detroit, USA.

Registrants who register for the S* Bioinformatics practical workshop are required to listen to 10 S* online lectures, participate in S* practical tutorials and take an optional assessment at the end of the workshop to pass and qualify for the traditional S* Certificate of Participation in Introductory Bioinformatics. In addition, the Hands-on sessions features the practical aspects of bioinformatics, and at the end of the workshop, qualifies the participants a special S* Certificate of Participation in Practical Bioinformatics.

The intensive Practical Bioinformatics Hands-on Course primarily covers topics including:
  • The APBioKnoppix bioinformatics platform (See APBioKnoppix website), Linux operating system and Unix shell commands and simple scripting
  • Survey of commonly used bioinformatics software
  • Basic usage of EMBOSS sequence analysis package and other software
  • Setting up a Web-accessible bioinformatics database with MySQL and PERL/CGI.
  • Bioinformatics examples in PERL/BioPERL
  • Interpreting BLAST searches and setting up a BLAST database with Web interface and simple Unix Shell Programming/CGI
  • Multiple sequence alignment with CLUSTAL and simple phylogenetic trees
  • Structural biology visualisation and simple homology modelling
  • Bioinformatics MiniProject based on a given biological scenario e.g.
    • Genome Annotation of a given prokaryotic genome
    • Designing PCR primers for the Avian Influenza virus
    • Subunit Vaccine candidates for the Avian Influenza virus
    • Bioinformatics of Prions
    • etc.

Participants will have access to a computer and USB thumbdrives which have to be returned at the end of the workshop, (You can bring your own if you wish.)

Each participant will be given a free LiveCD comprising the Knoppix (Linux) operating system with a comprehensive range of pre-installed bioinformatics tools and other software such as Apache, MySQL and Webmin.

Who should attend:

  • S* online course participants who wish to complete the entire S* online course in a one-week sitting.
  • Biologists with some experience of bioinformatics who wish to gain a feel of what it takes to do some bioinformatics service development beyond being a power user.
  • People with computing background who are curious to find out whether they can apply their expertise to bioinformatics for the first time.
